VOLUNTEERS OF AMERICA OF LOS ANGELES

SRI LANKA RELIEF FUND

 FEBRUARY 2009 UPDATE

As many other disasters have taken place in the world since the tsunami occurred in December 2004, few organizations are still providing tsunami relief in Sri Lanka.  While the immediate need for food and medicine has long since gone, there is still a need for long term assistance - and we continue to fund projects which are designed to help those affected by the tsunami rebuild their lives and improve their standard of living.

We continue to sponsor children in both the southern and eastern parts of the country, and during this month, we had the pleasure of meeting a family whose children we have been sponsoring for several years. This family lives in a remote area of southern Sri Lanka and they have been struggling to survive since the tsunami killed the father of the family.  Our assistance has been helping the family make ends meet and has helped the children stay in school.

We also provided funding so that a nursery school serving many tsunami affected children in the Matara area could purchase furniture.  While they had received funding from another organization to construct the school building, they did not have funds for furniture.  We were pleased to be able to provide this funding so that the school could open and begin to serve children and families in this area.

Funds are also being provided for the establishment of a new library in the Hambantota area.  Previously, children and families in the area had to travel 20km to get to the nearest library.  By having the library closer to their home, children and families in this area will read more often and this will help provide more opportunities for them in the future.  The children and families in this area are extremely excited about this new library being established in their community.  The library is currently under construction and should be open within the next couple of months.

Finally, the medical student that we have been sponsoring for several years has completed his studies and will be helping those in need in Sri Lanka very shortly.

Additional school and micro-credit related projects designed to provide long term assistance to tsunami affected children and families in Sri Lanka are planned for the future.

Thank you for your continued support of those in need in Sri Lanka!
